The laser treatment of the eye is one of the most applied methods in recent years. In particular, the Excimer Laser has been used in the treatment of many refractive errors of the eye for more than 20 years. This treatment method, also known as ‘Eye Plotting’, is performed with a device called Excimer Laser. This device produces ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 193 nm using Ar F gas. Excimer Laser treatment is usually used in the treatment of myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. This method is one of the most commonly used methods.
WHO IS SUITABLE FOR THE EXIMER LASER?
The Excimer treatment method can be applied in patients over 18 years of age with eye numbers not changing more than 0.50 in the last 1 year, myopia up to -9.0 and hyperopia and astigmatism up to + 5. Excimer can also be applied for patients with a sufficient level corneal thickness but there should be no rheumatism and diabetes, discomfort and other eye diseases. In Excimer laser treatment, it is important to check the eye before surgery to see if it is suitable for this treatment. The Excimer laser treatment can be applied to people with refractive errors in the eye. The most important symptoms of refractive errors are pain in the eyes, discomfort and poor vision. Vision defects such as inability to see far away, inability to see the near, astigmatism are refractive errors.
WHO IS NOT SUITABLE?
The Excimer treatment is not applied to all patients. The people who cannot have this treatment can be listed as:
- People with rheumatism
- People with diabetes
- Pregnant women
- Breastfeeding women
- People with keratoconus
- Patients with eye pressure (partial)
- Patients with cataract
ABOUT THE EXCIMER TREATMENT
There are some points to consider before and after a excimer laser treatment.
BEFOR THE OPERATION:
- There is no harm in eating on the day of treatment.
- If there is a medication used regularly, the doctor should be informed.
- Eye make-up should not be applied on the day of operation.
- Perfume should not be used on the day of operation.
TREATMENT PROCESS:
- You are given sedatives up to 45 minutes before surgery. The reason for this drug is to reduce the excitement.
- Before the operation you will be asked to wear a cap and shirt to provide you with a sterile environment. However, only slippers used in this section will be worn.
- Before starting the treatment process, you will lie on your back on the laser bed and keep your head straight. After this, an antiseptic solution will be applied to your eyelids and a sterile drape will be covered. Then the treatment method will be applied according to the type of operation. The surgery is comfortable and short.
- After the treatment, antibiotic drops will be added to your eye and you will be able to return to your home after waiting 30 minutes.
AFTER THE OPERATION:
- It is common for you to see blurry after the Excimer treatment. You may feel stinging, watering and burning in your eye for up to 2 hours after the procedure.
- Pain is rarely seen after the procedure and can be relieved with a mild painkiller.
- After the procedure, you should not rub your eyes.
- You should not wash your face directly after surgery.
- Do not watch anything on the TV or computer, nor read books or newspapers.
- Do not take a bath or wash your face.
- You will need a short check-up at the hospital the day after treatment. After this check, you can continue your normal life.
- You must come to check in the first week and the first month after the procedure.
- You should not use make up for 10 days after the procedure and you should not enter the sea and pool for 20 days.
- You can take a bath after the check-up the day after treatment, but you should avoid leaking shampoo and soap to your eyes.
