What is Cornea?

Cornea is the name given to the dome-like transparent structure located at the outer part of the eye. The cornea has two important tasks for the eye. One of these is to refract light from the outside and provide a clear view of the retinal region, which will enable visualization. It also has a feature that protects the eye from external factors. Cornea is the most important part of eyes vision. Therefore, even the slightest distress in the cornea significantly reduces the level of vision.

WHAT ARE THE CORNEA DISEASES AND THE SITUATIONS AFFECTING IT?
ALLERGIC REACTIONS

Allergic reactions are among the factors that adversely affect the cornea. Especially pollen allergy causes redness, itching and burning. It is also known that some eye medications and contact lenses are causing allergies on the cornea.

CORNEAL INFECTIONS

There are a number of bacterias, viruses and fungi that can adversely affect the cornea. These external factors can cause various diseases, as in allergic reactions. An infection called keratitis can be extremely troublesome. Problems such as blurred vision and pain are among the diseases caused by keratitis infection. Symptoms of keratitis are pain, stinging, white spots, blur and redness. Bacteria, viruses, fungi can cause this condition. However, rheumatic disorders may also cause some form of keratitis.

CONJUNCTIVITIS

The conjunctiva is a very important tissue that protects the scleral part and the eyelids. Infections that affect the conjunctiva adversely affect the eye by causing problems such as swelling, itching and burning. This disorder has an infectious effect and can easily pass from person to person. If conjunctivitis is left untreated, it can even cause permanent vision loss.

CORNEAL DISTROPHIES

Corneal dystrophy is the name given to the eye becoming blurred by losing its transparency due to genetic diseases. Because of this discomfort, the patient cannot see clearly. This disorder can also occur for hereditary reasons.

CORNEAL ULCER

Corneal ulcer is known as a condition especially complained by people who sleep without closing their eyes. Corneal ulcer is a condition caused by dryness of the eyes. If this condition is not treated, vision loss may occur.

PTERYGIUM

The tissue located on the edge of the eye progresses onto the cornea. This condition is usually seen in people who work under the sun for a long time. Surgical intervention is not necessary unless there is a visual problem.

DRY EYE

Dry eye is one of the most common eye diseases. Tear, which is of great importance for the eye to prevent infections and itchiness is secreted in people who have dry eyes in minimal amount. This causes problems such as burning, stinging and itching in the eyes of the person.

KERATOCONUS

It is the disease that leads to deformation and forward orientation of the cornea. This condition is the cause of astigmatism type eye disorders. It is explained by the forward curvature of the cornea. It is also called corneal sharpening. This condition usually starts at the age of 15-17 and progresses to 35-40 years. The course of this disease varies from person to person. The general complaint in the first stage of the disorder is that the number of glasses changes frequently. As the disease progresses, a clear view cannot be provided.

CORNEAL ABRASION

It is caused by injuries on the cornea. Things such as dust particles, movements of the contact lens or foreign objects entering the eye may cause corneal abrasion.

All these conditions can be treated today.
