WHAT IS CATARACT?

Cataract is the opacity of the lens behind the pupil, which allows the person to see, to lose its transparent structure and become dull. Cataract causes a decrease in visual acuity. It usually begins when the lens, whose transparency deteriorates, is blurry and stained like glass. As a result, there are complaints about vision. When the cataract is well matured, the objects appear blurry. Cataracts cause problems such as eye fatigue and headache.

SYMPTOMS

  • Reduction in vision day by day
  • Difficulty in reading
  • Fading colors
  • Difficulty in night vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Double vision
  • Frequent change of glasses numbers

WHY DOES CATARACT OCCUR?

Cataract usually occurs due to aging. With the effect of aging, the ophthalmic lens becomes dull and cataracts occur. In addition, high cortisone-containing medications are among the factors that increase the risk of cataracts. Cataracts can also occur due to hereditary reasons without any discomfort. It is possible to list the causes of cataracts as follows:

  • May occur due to age
  • There is a possibility of coexisting metabolic diseases in newborns
  • May occur as a result of eye impacts
  • Can be seen in diabetic patients
  • May occur as a result of problems such as inflammation in the eye
  • May occur after cortisone use

Cataract formation usually occurs due to age. In the elderly, it is such normal as hair whitening and wrinkles. In addition, genetic factors, eye trauma and excessive exposure to sunlight cause this problem to occur.

RISK FACTORS IN CATARACT

RISK FACTORS THAT CAUSE ACCELERATING THE DEVELOPMENT OF CATARACT CAN BE LISTENED AS FOLLOWS:

  • Increasing age
  • Diabetes disorders
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Overexposure to sunlight
  • High blood pressure
  • Eye injuries
  • Inflammation of the eye
  • Previous eye surgeries
  • Corticosteroid-type drug use
  • Excessive alcohol consumption

HOW IS CATARACT DIAGNOSED?

The cataract is the loss of transparency of the lens, which is normally transparent like glass. It can also be called a curtain descent. Cataract is diagnosed by a biomicroscopic examination. There is no drug to slow or stop the cataracts after they begin to form. Therefore, the only treatment method after the diagnosis of this disease is surgical.

The following methods can also be used to diagnose a cataract:

  • Visual acuity test
  • Pupil magnification

CATARACT TREATMENT

A cataract is an incurable disease. Surgical intervention is essential here. Cataract is a condition that needs to be treated as soon as it starts to decrease visual quality and negatively affect a person’s daily life. Cataract treatment methods have been highly developed in recent years. Thanks to the artificial lenses, people have the chance to see in an extremely natural way. During the surgery, the natural lenses in your eye will be changed with artificial lenses.

Cataract is not a challenging surgical procedure for patients. The patient does not feel any pain because the eye is numbed with a small amount of injection or drops. The duration of surgery usually does not exceed half an hour. Therefore, it can be considered as a simple operation for the patients.

Of course, this does not mean that this operation will be performed easily anywhere. The surgery should be performed by experienced eye surgeons in a hygienic operating room.
